  1. Yes and in TX you are summoned to jury duty.  I was on a murder case in Dallas over 20 years ago and served on the grand jury in Hill county more recently.  It was hard to decide on the verdict of guilt of murder and the sentence.  The grand jury indicts or no-bills.  It was an honor to be able to participate and do my civic duty.

  2. Not yet. But I just got my summons today.

And in what state do you sign up for jury duty?

I've never heard of people volunteering for jury duty.

Here in FL jurors are paid only $15 a day.  After serving for 3 days you get a raise.  $30 a day.  And mileage is not paid.

  3. Yes. I served on a jury in a landmark case in Arkansas. It was the first case after Congress declared that shooting at the police was attempted capital murder. A man had robbed a store and shot at 2 officers who had stopped him later. It was his 3rd offense for robbery. He got 75 years for the robbery and a consecutive 75 year term (suggested by the jury) for shooting at our cops. I hope he enjoys life at our state prison because he's going to spend the rest of his there.

  4. Where I live, you do not apply, you get summoned.  I have served on a jury six times in my life as of now, I enjoyed it very much and was jury foreman three times.

  5. I was just very recently on a jury in a case where we found the defendant guilty.  What surprised me was how bad I felt to have to vote that way.  He was not a sympathetic character and the guy was obviously guilty.  We had a very short deliberation and I know we did the right thing.  He deserved what he got.

What got me was when the judge read the verdict in court.  I was surprised to feel tears well up in my eyes.  It was a very solemn moment and it was unexpected.
