This is a question for the ladies. Who are your role-models/heroes? What songs, shows, or other medias give you all the inspiration to be independent and strong?

  1. alicia moore (pink)

    ani difranco

    gina gershon

    clea duvall

buffy summers (not smg but her character on the show)

    willow rosenburg and allyson hannigan

    angelina jolie

    emily sailers

    rogue from x-men

and jenniffer nettles (until she sold out all her ideals and started doing the wholesome all american bullshit with sugarland. her music used to stand for something... now its deconstructing the very basis of her originals)

oh and then of course madonna, her book and her response to the media about the playboy issue made a big impact on me.

i loved her response though. the media is all like oh my god you appeared in playboy, youre naked in a mens magazine and a role model blah blah blah and she just said " so what?"

  2. Song:1000 miles Vanessa Carlton

    Role model:Demi Lovato

  3. -my dad

    -"Stupid Girls" by Pink

    -US Women's Soccer Team

-everyone (just about) at my church

-anti-fems (my haters make me stronger)

    -progressives

-stem cell research activists I work with

  4. Hillary Clinton, Simone de Beauvoir.

EDIT: And Juno. She was cool.

But really, I don't get my inspiration to be independent and strong from any shows or songs or anything, I get it from inside. It's just within me.

  5. tyra banks!

  6. Queen Latifah. She's confident with her body, she carries herself well, and is not afraid to be herself.

And Daniel Radcliffe. He never gives up on his dreams, he goes for what he wants, no matter what people have against him, he's not stuck up on his money, and is the most charitable 18 year old I know. It's nice to see a teenager who's feet are firmly planted on the ground. I hope he never changes.

  7. my mum. what celebrities does is of no interest to me

  8. Janis Joplin.

    Inspiration, not a role model.

  9. I gotta be honest its not usually famous people I look up to. Most of my life it was my teachers that I looked up to. women who dedicate their life to helping others and don't get the recognition they deserve. but if i had to say a movie, Juno was pretty hardcore. lol

    can anyone please help me?

    Thanks.

  10. I am a child of the 80's. Madonna was a big role model for me.

  11. Role model: Miranda Kerr or Ashley Tisdale.

  12. Belle from "Beauty and the Beast". Yes, I know she is a cartoon, does that truly matter? And most actresses from the 50's.

Don't know about the independent and strong bit though, I'm not really feminist.

  13. Mary Mother of Jesus (hush you atheist it's my belief, don't have to be yours)

    My Mom (respect)

    My daughter (strength)

My Niece (following her dreams despite opposition)wrestler for team NJ

    Whoopie

    Queen Latifa

    Mother Theresa of Calcutta

    St Bridget of Ireland

    C Vivian Stringer

    Olympics

  14. Role model- Erma Bombeck. Ernest Hemingway. Oooh, little Edie.

Heroes- Phil Ochs, Hunter S Thompson. Einstein. The insane inspire me. The three above apply as well.

Songs- I'm tremedously inspired by Phil Ochs. I've found a lot of genius in music. Van Morrison. Tori Amos. Mostly though, as per the last 6 months... Tiger Army. Really, really great stuff. I guess my favorite songs right now are "Never Die" and "In The Orchard."

Shows? House. I've always wanted to be a doctor... I'll probably turn out like House. That's why I'm leaning towards research medicine, with stop offs in OB/GYN in Africa... I can be nice for limited amounts of time. I don't watch a ton of TV.

I'm in love with the line "The only sin is to die without having truly lived."

also... "In death as in life... I will arise!" "My conscious carries the weight of blood." "Did what I did 'cause I felt that I had no choice, but there's always another way."

  15. Role model: My mom

Favorite shows: Saving Grace and The Closer!

    Both depict strong female roles!

  16. I have quite a few, typically for different reasons.  I look up to my boss as well as a former boss for my career, my grandmother for her determination and strength, my mother for her caring free spirit and ability to "tell it like it is", my MIL for her fashion sense, my husbands aunt for her cooking skills, my aunt for her ability to balance work and children effectively...many women, all close to me.  I rarely look to media because I find it to be false, cold or simply not applicable to me and my goals in life.

  17. My mother, I don't have any other role models because you don't need peopel in the media etc to teach you how to be strong or independant or a good person, you build it up from within and from your own life experience.
