Ladies play golf to support Cancer Charity
16th annual Lassie Golf Tournament was played at Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club. Like always, this year’s tournament was held to support the cancer charity, CancerCare Manitoba. This year was special as it also supported an additional cause,
women in Africa.
As many as 136 women golfers participated in the event, making it a lively tournament. The usual pressure of the competitive tournament was absent, as the players were there to support the cause. This was a commendable effort on the part of organisers.
According to the organisers, women golfers played because they have seen what cancer can do to a human life. Many had a second hand experience while some had personal contact with the deadly disease.
Tanis Bannister, member of the organizing committee was very excited about the presence of so many women golfers. She said, “It’s wonderful to fill a golf course with women. The enthusiasm keeps building and building”.
The format was an 18-hole game, with four top places in both gross and net scores. This unusual format reflected the nature of the event.
It was very fitting that the winner of a golf tournament held as a cancer charity event was a cancer survivor herself.
Judi Lidstone managed to register an overall lowest gross score. With a final score of 77, she emerged victorious. Lidstone was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago. After treatments, the cancer abated but she went into a remission just four years ago.
The organisers tried their best to make the event as much fun as possible. There was a prize for every participant. In addition, each hole carried a competition which was liked either to skill or was a game of chance.
To make things interesting, there was a putting competition that many golfers declared it to be a huge success.
This year, all golfers received a special complimentary tote bag. This bag was hand stitched by women in Africa. The efforts were in support of charities for the women in Africa and the tournament organisers donated generously to the cause.
The tournament was a great success and proved once again that the charity golf events have not lost their appeal to the golfing community.
