Lady Govs fail to stop Lipscomb University - Volleyball update
Following their monstrous success at the Golden Dome Invitational last week, the girls’ volleyball team of Lipscomb University recorded another great performance against Austin Peay on Wednesday, September 14.
The Lady Bisons cruised past the Lady Govs to a 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, and 25-16) victory in a thrilling encounter at the Allen Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. With success against Lady Govs, Lipscomb improved to an overall record of 5-6 in the season. On the other hand, it was the ninth defeat for Austin Peay University in the running season, whereas they have captured only two matches so far, making it a 2-9 record for Lady Govs in the 2011 Season.
The first whistle of the referee started things off and Lady Bisons jumped out of the gate quickly. They targeted accurate spots and put away nice shots. Lipscomb earned a lead of five points while Austin Peay was yet to break the ice. By the time Lady Govs scored two points, the hosts jumped to a lead of 8 points at 10-2. Hernandez of Austin Peay put in some effort for her team but Lipscomb stayed on top of the game the rest of the way. Bisons secured the opening set of the match with 25-11 on board.
After losing the first set, Govs paid more attention to their defence and tried to break the rhythm of a pumped up opponent. The use of a strong defensive technique helped Lady Govs to find their feet in the second set. They pushed Bisons behind and built a lead of 5-4. However, the resilient rivals bounced back in the game with strong hits by Lauren Ford. They retook the control of operations and rallied from 13-10 to 20-17. Austin Peay came strong to tie the score at 21-all and created a new twist in the game. Anyhow, they couldn’t find the winning point as Lady Bisons captured second set with an ace and kill near the set points 26-24.
Lipscomb played to their full potential and dominated the opposite side in the third set. They easily managed to win the set by posting 25-16 and declared match victory.
Lady Govs offense and defence both had trouble throughout the match. They finished with 27 kills while posting a .110 attack percentage. Ilyanna Hernandez was the high scorer who pitched out nine kills. On contrary, Lady Bisons were simply amazing in the match. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Ford led the scores with match high 14 points on kills. Junior Kaycee Green was equally active and notched 10 kills. Sophomore libero of Lipscomb Stephanie Rex handled the tricky shots with great skills and hauled in 13 digs.
Lady Govs will return to the court on Friday as they are scheduled to take on Eastern Kentucky at the Ohio Valley Conference opener. The Lipscomb squad will now turn toward Atlantic Sun Conference, which is set to take centre stage on September, 23. Lady Bisons will be challenged by Mercer and Kennesaw State University Volleyball team, next week.
