Lady Hawks fall to Rams in the last match of Brown Invitational – Volleyball News
Following a spectacular performance in the first two fixtures at the Brown Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team dropped the third match to Fordham Rams, 1-3 (21-25, 25-20, 26-28, and 21-25). The match was held on
Saturday, September 17, as Providence, Rhode Island set up the field of play. UMES Hawks finished the Brown Invitational Tournament with a final record of 2-1, while Fordham clinched their first win during the campaign and set up a record of 1-2.
Key contributors
UMES’ Lea'Aetoa put up a heroic effort and chipped in 19 points. She notched 19 kills with a .483 hitting percentage. Additionally, she was also credited with three digs in the match. Saitaua Losia was the second best scorer for the Hawks. She went for double-double
with 17 kills and 11 digs. Moreover, she also added three block assists.
On the other side of the net, Brittany Daulton was the most influential player as she collected 11 kills and 14 digs for Fordham. Her team-mate, Lisa Hipp, helped the Rams with 10 kills, seven digs and five assists.
Match overview
UMES Hawks opened the match as Maline Vaitai scored the first point of the game through a kill before Sara hit an ace and UMES moved to 2-0. The Fordham squad responded to the early strike and tied the score at 4-4. However, Lady Hawks quickly broke the
tie and went up again. Both sides traded leads, while the first set swiftly inched its way to the end. After the second technical timeout, Rams came up with powerful attacks by Brittany Daulton and seized a first set win, 25-21.
Using the advantage of the first set win, Rams jumped to a 7-3 lead in the second set. Hawks chased the score and picked the lead after hitting a 3-0 run. Lea'Aetoa and Ndidi Ibe of UMES perfectly complimented each other and raised their team’s score. Lady
Hawks seized their chances and evened the match by winning the second set at 25-20.
UMES Team could not carry the momentum into the third set and lagged behind. Rams seemed to be on a scoring spree as they added point after point. The Hawks tried different combinations and managed to steal points easily. Long rallies were exchanged and
gradually the match turned into a heated competition. In the end, Fordham got up in the set by a two-point advantage at 28-26.
Rams continued with their good work and built a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. Hawks faced a lot of trouble and trailed behind throughout the set. Fordham took full advantage of the nervousness of their rivals and closed off the match by securing a fourth set
25-21.
Next up
UMES will return to action next week. They are scheduled to participate in the High Point Invitational on September 24. The Lady Hawks will take on Campbell High School and hosts High Point in two matches on the same day.
