Lady Lions lose to in-state rivals Cajuns by 3-0: Volleyball News
The Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana University dropped a non-conference match to in-state rivals Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday, September 20. The Ragin Cajuns exhibited impressive play and held off their opponent for a 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) victory.
The success evened the Cajuns’ win/loss record (8-8), while the Lady Lions shifted to 4-13 in the season.
The top spiker for the Cajuns, Taylor Meade, topped all scorers with a match-high 15 points. She recorded eight kills and delivered seven aces. Freshman Caitlin Ausilien settled for the second best scorer in the match as she registered 13 points. She was
not only good in offense but demonstrated remarkable reception skills. Ausilien was credited with a game high 17 digs. Louisiana-Lafayette was greatly assisted by setter Mandi Gavin, who recorded 33 assists.
Lady Lion’s Freshman Elizabeth Ramee, notched 11 kills with a hitting percentage of .145, while Courtney Donald supported the team with seven points. Lindsey Young was very effective for the Lady Lions in terms of reception. She provided 26
assists and also recorded 13 digs.
The start of the match was good for the Cajun side as they set the tone in the opening set. Meade served with a lot of precision and accuracy, which allowed ULL to put pressure on the opposite side. However, Lady Lions responded with good blocks and incorporated
their counter attack. They chased the score efficiently and came close to the Cajuns at 12-11. Meanwhile, Blair Claypoole got consecutive kills. Louisiana-Lafayette jumped to the next stop of 19-12 and made it quite difficult for the challengers to defend
their positions. The opening set ended with a 10-point margin, while the Cajuns claimed a win.
Cajuns began with a strong lead in the following set and further tightened the screws on the Lady Lions. They capitalised on the Southeastern team through Meade’s impressive services and kills. The Lions caught up in a flurry of attack errors and suffered
several setbacks. The Cajuns built a lead of 16-10 at the second technical timeout and did not allow the Lady Lions to regroup. ULL remained in the lead from the start and secured a second set at 23-18.
The hosts came up with a hostile response in the third set. The loss of the two sets in a row had devastated them and they threw everything in the attack. Cajuns trailed behind with a difference of six points at 2-8. Nonetheless, the Lady Lions failed to
carry the momentum and gradually went down. ULL retook the control of operations and won the third set at 25-21.
In the next run, Lady Lions are scheduled to take on Lamar Cardinals on Thursday, September 22. On the other hand, Cajuns have two more games scheduled in this week. They will try to improve their winning record by playing against South Alabama and Troy
Trojans on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
