Lady luck shines on Feng: 2011 World Championship
The dream of winning the individual title for the top Singaporean player Feng Tianwei started with much ease at the 2011 GAC GROUP World Table Tennis Championships, Rotterdam. In 2010 Feng led the Singaporean squad at the World Championship and won the team title. This year the proceedings of the mega event are in her favour. She was placed in a relatively easy draw in the main round.
Feng Tianwei is currently on the sixth seed on the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Women's Singles world ranking. This year Feng faced problems in competing in five ITTF Pro Tours in which she featured. She will contest for the player, who will be one of the winner from the qualifying rounds. In the second main round she will face Czech Republic player, Renata Strbikova.
On her way to the quarter-final Feng has to overcome her own compatriot Yu Mengyu, the number 26 seeded player on the ITTF ranking. In another match she has to defeat Tie Yana the number 15 ranked player on the ITTF ranking from Hong Kong. In the quarter-final it will be a battle of nerves for Feng Tianwei as she will be facing the number three ranked player from China.
The team's manager of the Singaporean squad, Eddy Tay, is quite optimistic on the player’s performance and she said, "She got the better draw out of all the players, and the good thing is that she won't meet the Chinese players until the quarter-finals. She lost to Tie Yana at the Women's World Cup (in the qualifying group stage in Kuala Lumpur last year), and if she plays Yu Mengyu, it will be a totally different ball game because they play together so much."
For the rest of the Singaporean team the draws were not that much encouraging, they will be facing top Chinese players in their first matches of the main draws. Wang Yuegu will be facing Liu Shiwen, Li Jiawei will encounter Wu Yang and Sun Bei Bei the competition would be the toughest in her playing career as she will be facing, the number two ranked player of the ITTF World ranking from China, Guo Yan.
The only player for whom the stakes are high to reach the final rounds with Feng Tianwei is Ding Ning. It will be a thrilling week ahead on the table tennis calendar this year, May 8 to 15.
