Lady of Shamrock to head a small field in the Honeymoon Stakes
The 3-year-old Hronis Racing owned filly, Lady of Shamrock has had an excellent sophomore season so far, with two wins out of three starts, and all those two victories have come against tough fields.
The John Sadler trained filly is now looking to turn in her first career hat-trick when she takes part in the Grade 2, $150,000 Honeymoon Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park on 9 June, 2012.
The 1 1/8 mile long turf race has reeled in five, 3-year-old fillies, and against four opponents, Lady of Shamrock, will be anchored at the back as usual, and make a late run, and in this race it will be a easy target as she has only four to contend with.
As a juvenile, Lady of Shamrock struggled a bit to down her maiden race, but eventually did it in her third try at Churchill Downs on 12 November, 2011, going over a distance of 1 1/16 miles .
John Sadler then opted the unique turf course at Santa Anita Park for the rest of the starts for Lady of Shamrock, and it was a wise decision as the filly won her first stakes race there, the Blue Norther Stakes at about a mile on 30 December, 2011.
The New Year brought a significant change, as Lady of Shamrock got acquainted to champion jockey, Mike Smith, who debuted the filly with her debut on dirt at Santa Anita Park.
The one off try at dirt was in the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes which served as the seasonal debut, but her return to 1 1/16 miles over an unfamiliar surface made her finish third on the day to winner, Willa B Awesome.
Had Sadler chosen a turf graded stakes race, Lady of Shamrock might’ve landed her first hat-trick, but it wasn’t to be. All it did was to convince John Sadler that Lady of Shamrock is a turf horse and she proved it by winning her next two starts on grass.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Scat Daddy, won the China Doll Stakes on the back of a defeat and then went on to land the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes in late-running fashion, and now she will be running for her hat-trick in the Honeymoon Stakes.
