  1. Doma, hi,

Nice that you are narrowing down what you are interested in.  Well Lake Malawi has a ton of different types.  A large number of species from this lake are known as Mbuna or "rock" fish.  These types of fish are lower level substrate dwellers.  There is a TON of information about them, and how each person cares for these fish is always going to be slightly different.  One of the most common things you should find is these types need a large amount of rocks in the tank, and decor that is enclosed will help too.  These fish prefer a higher PH and higher hardness water.  Males do not tolerate other males very well, so knowing how to s*x your species is very beneficial.  The larger of a tank you can get, the better your odds are to support a large mix of species.

I keep and breed a few species of these, maybe not as long as JW has listed but I feel I can compare just as well to any cichlid breeder.  You can also check in with CC woman, she's another breeder who answers quite a bit on here.

There literally is a ton of different things we could talk about, and not to stir any chit with the other posters, but you aren't going to find a better site for cichlid advice, SA, CA or African, then cichlid-forum.com.  I'm sorry I didn't type it out as a link, just google it, you can't miss it.  It will be worth your time.

  2. Here's a site for Cichilds:

Have fun with your new fishy!!! =D

  3. There are a lot of Lake Malawi cichlids of all types and we need more information to give any advice.  Some will get along great with other fish though I don't have any idea what other fish you have.  The American Cichlid Association is a great group and so is the Greater Chicago Cichlid Association www.gcca.net .  Check them both out.  You can also goto faas and find a local cichlid club.  They will teach you more about fish than you could believe and are a wonderful resource.

  4. I personally don't own any so I can't give any personal advice (which I find to be the most helpful), but I can offer this link which has a fairly large amount of info on the Malawi Zebra cichlid.  http://www.fishlore.com/aquariummagazine...

Asking a knowledgeable person at a local pet store would help a lot too because I find that talking to someone that cares from them is monumentally more helpful than a website or book because you can ask questions and get immediate answers.

If you are planning on getting rid of your other fish try finding them a home with someone that will take good care of them.  My aunt has convict cichlids in a 75 gallon and she is always trying to give the babies to me (they breed worse than rabbits!).  How big is your tank and what kind of fish do you have now?

  5. here is web site I use to get info and to look up fish I want to get in the future.

this gives alot of info. more than I ever could
