Lake Nona emerges victorious in Tavistock Cup – PGA Tour News
The two-day PGA Tour event of Tavistock Cup came to an end on 15 March, 2011, with Lake Nona club emerging victorious.
The exhibition event, being held annually since 2004 in Florida, sees top ranked professionals play as a team for the title. Audi, Heineken and J.P. Morgan are among the sponsors and the prize money sanctioned for the event is US$ 2.5 million.
Four internationally recognised golf clubs, with six highly-ranked players each, featured in it this year. Albany, Isleworth Golf and Country Club, Lake Nona Golf and Country Club and Queenwood Golf club were among the participating teams.
The winning team of Lake Nona comprised of Englishmen Ross Fisher and Oliver Wilson, Retief Goosen of South Africa, Peter Hanson and Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Irishman Graeme McDowell. All these players played exceedingly well throughout the 36 holes played, clearly showing their class on the field against the best in the world.
Lake Nona, after completing the two rounds, had a total aggregate score of 43-under par which was enough for them to secure victory. They won the event by a great margin of six strokes over the team of Albany which came second. Albany includes the former world number one Tiger Woods and the experienced South African Ernie Els.
It was England’s Wilson who was looking in superb form on the second day. He produced brilliance on the course against his opponent carding a round of seven-under par, 65 at the beautiful Isleworth golf club. Wilson’s scorecard showed seven birdies and had no bogey for his round. The 30-year old finished in a classic manner with three consecutive birdies in the last three holes. Wilson also won the Payne Stewart Award for the lowest score of the final day.
Lake Nona team was already ahead after the first round as they had a total score of 25-under par. All the six players managed to shoot under par rounds to lift the trophy. Their second day score of 18-under par added to the total which was easy for them to win against the other three teams.
For Nona, Stenson carded four-under par, Fisher, Hanson and McDowell posted steady rounds of two-under par each. The experienced Goosen only managed to card a moderate round of one-under par, 71 to complete their victory.
The team of Albany came second and had a deficit of sixteen shots over the winning team. Woods, Els, Indian Arjun Atwal, Trevor Immelman, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose were the members. Only three players including Woods managed to post under-par rounds on the second and final day.
Hosts Isleworth finished for the third position, while Queenwood finished last.
