Lake/Pond shore fishing? Need help.?

I live Pennsylvania and there is a rather large lake/pond that we have wanted to fish and havent until now. I dont think it has been fished a bunch because the growth around the pond is very tall and there is almost no place to fish. This meaning we had to clear out a small area to fish from and put down some ruffage and logs to stand on to even cast out. We have heard there is several fish in there from people and it has to have some monsters. We used nightcrawlers with a lit bobber at about 11:30 PM and got a few bites but no fish. I was really hoping to catch atleast one but in about 2 Hours we got nothing. When is the best time to fish and what is the best guess to catch something like a bass with? Remember moving around the lake is not a huge option because it is hard to get past the vegetation so we would be in one spot or so.

Id like to snag a few fish and cook em up :)

  1. Some of the ponds in Pennsy have trout and bass mixed together. Try some live shiners, if there is bass in there they won't be able to pass this bait up. You can also try some roostertails in 1/8 - 1/4 oz. for the trout and bass. Small curltailed grubs work well for most fish. To get around try some chest waders or a float tube. The float tube is made for this kind of fishing. Happy fishing!!!

  2. night is usally the best for big bass because they are not as leery.if your new to bass fishing and even if you arent try a top water buzz bait for bass.cast it out and as soon as it hits the water start reeling with your rod tip up.keep the lure just on top of the water as your real in.also a rapala siver floating minnow seems to always catch fish.it comes with directions on how to use.its very simple.try casting it out and letting it sit tell the wake from it hitting the water is gone.the give it a few twitches.then repeat step one letting it set.they arent very heavy so get a bigger one that you can cast farther.besides bigger baits mean fewer fish but also means bigger fish.

  3. get a float tube and fish using it to get around in the pond. you should be using baits the immulate the natural food the pond has like crawdads and frogs and trout aren't in summer ponds (the water temp is too high)  you will learn proper presentation methods for artificial baits from books and then practice but my guess is little bass or even bluegill is what's biting your bait off and missing the hooks if you want to catch little fish scale down your hook size. if you want to go for their granparents use big baits 12" plastic worms and use a scent on them (attractant for bass) fishing from a dock you made laid over reeds and weeds will not work really well but maybe a lot better if practicing yopur casting so you can fish parrelel to the weeds your dock is sticking out from and slowly bringing back the frog and jigs oand worms. Never let the sun or moon cuase your own shadow on the water. at night use the color black for your baits. also In spring bass will devour lizards as they swim down and eat the eggs.

  4. If you are fishing for bass, i would go with a gary yakamoto seinko.  I find that the pumpkin green with any flake is best.  I would stay with darker colors in ponds as there is usually a lot of vegetation on the bottom as well as on top.  Try some morning fishing and see if you can get some top water action.  Use a good buzz bait or zara spook and see if they are biting on that.  Is bass the only fish in the pond?  Sounds like little fish if only bites and no fish and the lake is never fished.  Good luck, hope this helps.

  5. In the morning would be the best time to fish. the best lure to use for these type of conditions would be a yamamoto senko. This worm is easy to hook up, it's weedles, it casts out a country mile, and catches fish at an amazing rate. All you have to do is cast it out there, let it sink a bit then twitch and retreive a bit then twitch again. keep doing this until you have it all the way back. you can also pull this worm over the top of weedbeds and grasses to simulate a lizard or snake coming over the top of it.

the way you rig it is just to use a 1/0 worm hook for a 5'' or bigger worm  and 3/0 for any smaller worm. I'll include a web site that will paint a better picture. USE NO WEIGHT! this takes from performance of the bait.

also plastic tubes and curly tail worms will work to but are not as effective in being weedless. the website will show you how to rig them.

  6. the key is the time u fish,11.30pm is way past their supper.cant u go at 9to 10pm when there is a full moon dude.I caught the bass back into my tank to observe their feeding behavior n time the feed.other pond/lake fish feed at other time not exactly the same time but after taking an average of five different fish caught at 5 different location,I noticed they feed at about 9to 10pm at nite for really big fish nat a full moon their strike is much aggressive.they r more determine to get the bait fish  meaning that if they fail at the first strike they comeback for second even third.they r more willing to feed at the shallow water even to 30inches of water. These r the facts that I collected so far and also when their is a full moon the fish can see quite clearly bout 50percent less than during the day so it means that they r not that fussy.they will hit anything that's moving plus if it flashes.grey metallic with yellow stripes is the lure.if using minnows make sure it in the strike zone with the moon behind the bait so as the fish could notice the bait's shadow,movement,ripple/vibration with moon light as an extra kick, remember to hide or be stealthy as possible.their eyes can detect the slightest light movement/changes but not what the see as a whole at night.restrict movements if u can.noises don't really scare them off, some big fish r attracted to water surface vibration, like hitting the water with a stick will attract big fish within 300m in diameter.

  7. Id say fish early morning and use some minnows on a  bobber and a gob of nightcrawlers on the bottom. Large Catfish tend to dwell deep and those fish will give you the fight you are looking for. If you catch a few small bluegill try casting one out on your bobber..Slide the hook below its spine on one side and go all the way through..keep it alive when you do this and have a little weight and a big bobber...If a bass is feeding this will attract it..catfish as well.

  8. For bass, you had the right idea, but show up either in the morning or evening and use your nightcrawlers, along with surface plugs and imitation baits and aim for the shallows where they feed. In the afternoon, use spinners, buzzbaits, and diving plugs and lures and go for the deeper water where they take cover for the day (they will still bite).

    Good Luck!
