Lake Tahoe for a vacation?

Has anyone been to Lake Tahoe for a vacation? Is it expensive? When is the best time to go, where do you stay, what are things to do there? We want to keep our vacation relatively inexpensive. Thanks for the info!

we went to sacramento for thanksgiving (family) and i rented a car to go to tahoe for 2 days. the drive there was beautifiul and scary cliffs! We stayed before it was a high peak time for skiing but my g/f dostn ski. It wasnt crowded and there are millions of hotels/motels along the way. we just drove there and picked one that looked ok and it was 50-60/night or something. i bet if you look onilne you can find a cheap on off the main street or even on the main street. i think we and 2-3 other couples stayed at the hotel and it was nice with a pool and not far away from casinos. casinos are fun, drinking and gambling was fun, the main ride kart ride up the mountain in by the casino is only open a certain time of year. id wait until its open. forget whats it called. we drove around the lake and stopped at certain points, alot of trails, and there was 1-2 nice places to eat or grab a drink that nothing else was around and it was right on the beach and 1 place was actually right on the water! its not to to exciting but its relaxing and beaufitul to walk around and do a few things. 2-3 days would be good.

Lake Tahoe is a Wonderful place to go on vacation.  I have been there on vacation numerous times.  As far as expense goes, it all depends on what you want to do and where you want to stay.  We have gone there and stayed at the Best Western - relatively inexpensive and have actually camped several time - which is great.  The campsite programs there cost nothing and are wonderful.  There are many hiking trails and visitors attractions that cost minimal or nothing at all.  Horseback riding, taking the tram up, going for a raft ride down the Truckee River, fishing,  relaxing at the lake, renting a boat or gambling in the casino are just a few of the other things you can do.  I say go for it !!!  It's a great place and we can't wait to go back.
