  2. Lake Decatur

Lake Decatur (REA), located in Macon County, is owned and managed by the city of Decatur as a public water supply and recreational resource. The lake was created by damming the Sangamon River in 1922. It has a surface area of 3,093 acres and receives its water from a large agricultural watershed of 597,497 acres. The overall resource quality of Lake Decatur is considered "fair." Causes of pollution to the lake include nutrients, siltation, and suspended solids. Primary sources of pollution include agriculture and shoreline erosion. The city has been working with area landowners to help manage the watershed and, therefore, preserve this valuable resource.

The Sangamon is impounded in Decatur to form Lake Decatur, constructed in 1920-1922 to provide a water supply for Decatur. This lake, formed by damming the main stem of the river, with no control over upstream land uses, has had major problems with siltation and agricultural pollution. The lake often has excessive nitrate levels from agricultural runoff.
