Question:

Lakers Interested in S&T for Josh Smith?

As some of you might know from a question that was asked earlier the Lakers offered odom in a sign and trade for smith. Do you think it will happen? details from hoopsworld.com.....

"Pulling off a sign-and-trade, of course, means taking back salary roughly the equivalent of the first year of the signee's new contract. The Hawks could make a deal that would send Smith away - perhaps to the Los Angeles Lakers for Lamar Odom, one of the rumored deals out there -- here's what Atlanta would really be getting in that case: one year of Odom, at $14.5 million. His contract is up after this year, and the Hawks would probably lose Odom next summer.

If they keep Smith, they will either force him to reduce his salary demands or force him to accept a one-year tender offer. Because Smith was a fairly low draft pick (No. 17), his one-year deal would be just $3.1 million. Why trade Smith away for one year of Odom at $14.5 million when you could keep Smith for one year at $3.1 million?

  1. I don't think that would happen.. Why would they waste money on Lamar's contract.. There's been a trade rumor of Josh Howard for Josh Smith.. I think that trade is pretty equall.. Josh Smith would be a great fit with the Mavs.. The way they push the ball up the court

  2. I like Josh Smith a lot but hes not a lock-up defender.  Hes more of just a shot blocker.  We don't need a shot blocker, we need a lockdown perimeter defender that is a better shooter.  Smith has tremendous upside, but Lakers need to win now!!!!! Artest is still the best fit for the Lakers

  3. smith is Odoms equal right now in terms of impact on a gm plus unlike odom he is a factor on defense and at 23 will keep getting better odom is 29 and is as good as he will ever be and still does not produce on a consistent basis and is known for not showing up when it matters most .....I'm a laker fan and I know the hawks would be crazy to make that trade.....its a great trade for the lakers at 14 mil per odom is way overpaid and the lakers will not bring him back at that number smith is 23 and looking for 11 mil per and is a n up and coming star odom is in year 10  a good not great player and for all his talent he has a low bball IQ .....He makes alot of dumb plays at critical times of gms.

  4. I dont think that trade will happen because the Lakers wanted Ron Artest for Lamar Odom.

  5. when trying to win a title you have to have the right pieces. if the feel that smith is that right piece than i say go for it.

  6. i dont think smith could pass good enough to work in the triangle offense.but id probably not do the deal b/c the lakers are already the favorite to win it all next year so id stay put and if i were smith id go back to atlanta

  7. I personally think Josh Smith isn't a good fit to the triangle offense, I mean he is more of a PF player, and with Gasol already there, what's there left for Smith.

Also Josh Smith isn't a good shooter, and can't pass like Odom. I wouldn't pull that trade off.

I think Smith would be a better fit with the Hawks, than the Lakers.

  8. I doubt the Lakers want Josh Smith for Odom.

As someone who actually watched every laker game past season I can tell you with credence that there is nobody in the NBA that can do what Lamar Odom can do. Problem is, he doesn't always do all of those things.

yes, Josh Smith is a Much better jumper and shot blocker.but Lamar is one of a kind. He can pass like a world class PG, he can penetrate like LeBron, he can rebound with the best of em, and he has got the handles of your average point guard not to mention above average speed for a guy 6'10". And Josh SMith has No O.

I would not like to see Lamar go because when the whole team plays well (not including luke walton of course) Lamar plays well. And I would like to give next year a shot with Andrew Coming back to tear up the Paint all around the league. I feel Lamar will be more consistent with Bynum back because the whole team will be playing 70 win basketball next season with the Bynumite.

  9. Hard to tell if this will help Lakers.  It could back fire or turn out to be a great trade if it went through.  I agree that Hawk should keep Josh and make him one year offer and then let him go since they will most likely let Odom go too if they end up making the trade for Odom.
