Lakey Peterson and Laura Enever make the Round 3 cut at Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing News
America’s Lakey Peterson and Australia’s Laura Enever successfully made it through to the third round of the Vans US Open of Surfing, the sixth of eight events on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World
Championship Tour, after claiming victory in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Wednesday, July 23, 2013.
Peterson earned her win by getting the better of her compatriot Sage Erickson in the fifth heat of Round 2, bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival in the process.
Enever, on the other hand, downed Hawaii’s Malia Manuel to secure her place in Round 3, while removing the latter from the contention for the event title.
The top female surfing talent found themselves engaging in intense battles for survival in peaky two-to-four foot waves that were on offer at the main event site on the latest day of the competition.
Peterson, defending US Open Champion, found herself pitted against Erickson in the fifth heat of Round 2 after both the surfers failed to collect a win on the opening day of the competition.
As the battle got underway, Peterson collected the day’s highest two-wave total of 16.76 points to put her rival under immense pressure.
Erickson failed to rise up to the challenge and only managed to reach a heat-total of 11.77 points, thus surrendering victory to her rival.
“I had a really funky round yesterday,” Peterson said. “I was really nervous and I have high expectations because of last year. It’s my first time entering an event as defending champion and I was out of rhythm and tried to slow
it down today. I caught a few waves and stayed on it and I’m stoked to make it through. Sage (Erickson) is my best friend so it’s really a bummer when I have to surf against her.”
The battle for the latest remaining spot in the third round took place between Enever and Manuel.
Both the surfers put on a strong fight, determined to keep themselves alive in the competition. However, once the dust settled, it was Enever who stood victorious with a heat-total of 16.37 points against Manuel’s two-wave total
of 15.27 points.
