Lakey Peterson bows out to Rebecca Woods in Round 4 of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
Australia’s Rebecca Woods claimed victory over America’s Lakey Peterson in the third heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 4 that went down at the Dee Why point at Sydney, Australia, on Friday, April 20.
With her win over Peterson, Woods made her way through into the Quarter-finals while bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival.
Both Woods and Peterson had been getting plenty of attention at the fourth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series due to their performances. While the Australian surfer had gotten off to an excellent
start at Dee Why point despite surfing in challenging conditions, she had succumbed to the likes of Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons in her Round 3 heat to find herself battling it out for survival against Peterson in Round 4.
Peterson, 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour rookie, had been one of the standout performers over the last few days. Despite pitted against the top surfing talent from around the globe, the young sensation had managed to prove herself as a force to be reckoned
with. Even though she failed to claim victory in her Round 3 heat, her effort had been nothing short of spectacular, making her a strong candidate for the Quarter-finals.
With clean four-to-six foot waves breaking at the primary event site on Friday afternoon, Woods and Peterson got ready to take each other on to decide who got to advance further in the event.
Both the surfers took their time to adapt to the tricky surfing conditions with very scarce scoring opportunities on offer. Woods eventually broke free of the shackles to lock a wave, though only managed to earn a 4.00 off it. She immediately followed it
up with another 4.00-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 8.00 points.
Peterson’s form over the last few days would have convinced anyone that the task of getting past her rival’s modest heat-total was going to be a piece of cake. However, the American surfer shocked everyone by failing to come up with a decent response. Scoring
a 3.75 and 2.80 off her best-two waves, she finished with a heat-total of 6.55 points, consequently allowing her rival to walk away with the win.
