  1. If you want to impress your teacher, this is how. In Lamarck's theory, there was no role for selection. This is KEY. Darwin's was all about a set environment in which certain traits were selected for, as they led to differential reproductive success. Add that in with what the person above me said.

  3. "inheritance of acquired traits." sums up Lamarck's theory of evolution. The classic example I was given was cutting off the tails of mice. This acquired trait (lack of tails) would then be passed on to the next generation.

The weakness was it didn't work.

Lamarck did contribute to current evolutionary thought. He"concluded that species change over time by adapting to new environments. Like Darwin, Lamarck concluded that parents pass their traits on to their offspring. He also founded the principle of use and disuse: If an organ is used, it will become stronger, and if it is not used, it will weaken and may disappear in future generations"

It was his next step of "inner striving," that doomed him to the footnotes. This said that animals that reached for food with their necks would produce offspring with longer necks. Right back to the mice without tails.

Darwin's voyage on the Beagle allowed him to study the life forms on the Galápagos Islands. Here he found multiple species of finches each with different beaks. Each exploited different food resources. Each was at an advantage compared to the others. From his he developed the idea of natural selection.
