Aston Villa stunned Manchester City as they defeated the English champions 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium in last night’s Capital League Cup encounter.
There were two big shocks in yesterday night’s Capital One Cup fixtures, with City’s exit the pick of the bunch. The English Champions were left stunned after they lost 2-4 to visitors Aston Villa at their own turf.
Villa have not exactly enjoyed flying form in the Premier League this season. After finally managing a win against Swansea at Villa Park, the team went on to lose 4-1 against Southampton, despite taking the lead in the game.
The Capital One Cup is an entire different story. The club cruised to a 3-0 victory against lower league opposition Tranmere http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385 at home, and looked neat in possession and their passing.
However, this time around, the club faced a stern test taking on reigning English champions Manchester City. City haven’t exactly looked their best so far, but are still a formidable force at home.
The home side took the lead through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Barry-c14423 which levelled the score.
Aleksander Kolarov restored the host’s lead through a brilliantly struck free kick, but striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gabriel-Agbonlahor-c14288 equalized in the 70th minute, dragging the game to extra time.
Both sides looked tired, but it was Villa who emerged victorious. Agbonlahor was a constant threat for the hosts as his pace and physical presence caused problems for the City back four. The striker had a shot saved which fell into the path of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Charles-c8808 N’Zogbia,
who scored on the rebound.
Agbonlahor made it 4-2 with his second goal of the game, taking Villa through to the next round of the cup competition.
The game had its controversial moments as both managers were involved in a touch-line spat following a tackle by Joe Bennett. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mancini-c23323 approached the fourth official and an argument ensued.
Lambert was however not concerned about the disagreement and was delighted by the win. Speaking about the incident, he said:
"It wasn't a spat. I respect him as a manager and as an ex-player.”
“This was a massive result for us. It was a brilliant response because we never deserved to go behind twice."
