Aston Villa manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-c29347 Lambert was disappointed after last night’s 0-4 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, but admitted that he was not surprised when his team lost in the manner they did.
Villa have now conceded 12 goals in two successive games. The Clarets were at the receiving end of an 8-0 thrashing handed out by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 last weekend at Stamford Bridge, and ended up letting 4 goals in last night against Tottenham at Villa Park.
With a goal difference of -21, Villa are currently at 16th spot, with 18 points to their name. They are currently 3 points adrift of the relegation zone, and will go into next year on the back of two dismal and heavy defeats.
Having started the first half brightly, Aston Villa did not look like a team that had just recently lost 8-0 to Chelsea. Tottenham had more of the ball, but Villa looked threatening on the break, and were often looking solid. The first half ended in a stalemate,
but Tottenham punished Villa after the interval by scoring 4 goals within the space of 25 minutes.
Defoe scored the opener while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 grabbed a hat-trick, rounding off the scoring and the 3 points for the North London outfit. Villa were completely dismantled in the second half, and had no reply for a resilient and relentless Tottenham attack.
Lambert was surprisingly calm despite the defeat. When asked if he was surprised by the 2 back-to-back heavy defeats after an impressive run in the Capital One Cup and the league victories over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 and Norwich, he replied:
“I am not surprised by anything in football. Things can happen. You know it can happen, especially when you are playing one of the top sides. We rode our luck massively in the first half – Spurs were very good in the first half.”
“I thought we started the second half really well and were in the ascendancy, and I think with the first goal, there is a foul on Fabian in the first place – I think a free kick should have been given. We had a chance to get back into the game, but they
scored again."
