Lamont Peterson: Nothing shady happened in D.C. against Khan – Boxing News
Lamont Peterson, the current unified WBA (Super) & IBF Light Welterweight Champion, is scheduled to go for a rematch against former champion of the division Amir Khan on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Recently in an interview, Lamont
was asked about his thoughts regarding their first encounter in Washington D.C. and if Khan’s claims of the match decision being unjust hurt him. Peterson said that initially they did bother him but he is now over that phase and is now preparing to beat Khan
once again to prove his mettle.
Khan has been harsh towards Peterson and his camp. First Khan appealed for the split decision being unjust from the referee’s side and then the presence of the ‘mystery man in hat’, who was later identified as Mustafa Ameen by the IBF, made Khan uncomfortable.
During all this, Khan even criticised Peterson’s fighting style saying that he would not have won if the decision was fair and square. On the other hand, when Peterson was asked in a recent interview about how he felt over the criticism shown by Khan, Peterson
iterated, “Of course it did. But I'm a big boy, I'm a man. I'll get over it. That's the way I look at life."
Commenting on the irregularities of the fight as declared by the IBF, Peterson said, “I can only say that nothing shady happened in D.C. But I'm pretty sure they won't take my word for it.” He then went on to criticise Khan’s attitude saying, “To me, he
has to accept he's not the champ any more. He's said many times he'll train like a challenger. You are the challenger, so you will train like a challenger. To me, he just hasn't accepted it yet. But he'll have to because he can't go in the record books and
change the loss to a victory.”
Similarly, Khan, who now looks more comfortable with the overall scenario, said that he knows he made a few mistakes but still he feels like he had won the show. He further said that he will give his best in the rematch and that it will be a tough fight
in which both the fighters will know what to expect from each other.
