Lamont Peterson: Rematch with Amir Khan will be free of controversies – Boxing news
After taking a lot of criticism from Amir Khan, former unified WBA (Super) & IBF light welterweight champion, Lamont Peterson is now all up for the rematch.
Lamont made it clear that he has taken up the deal offered by Amir’s camp because it was the best deal to go for and not because their last match ended up in a controversy.
Lamont Peterson defeated Amir Khan on December 10 in Washington in front of his home crowd. However, Amir Khan was not willing to accept his defeat since he thought the decision was controversial.
He appealed to the IBF for the decision to be reversed following the controversial presence of a ‘mystery man’ and the points that were deducted from the final score of Khan. The IBF found several irregularities with the judgement and ordered an immediate
rematch.
However, Khan later withdrew his application saying that he will try to deal with Peterson on his own by making him a 50-50 revenue split deal.
Peterson who initially did not pay much heed to Amir’s offer is now all in for it. Their rematch will take place on March 19, 2012 in Las Vegas.
Peterson, on the rematch said, “I feel really good about my decision. I went over every option available to me in terms of the fights that were on the table. I weighed each one of them looking at the pros and the cons and at the end of the day this is the
one that made the most sense all the way across the board. I'm happy with the terms of the fight. It's at a neutral site and, when I beat him this time, he won't have anything to complain about.”
He further said that he wants everyone to know that he is the champion and that he can beat Khan anywhere. He said that he was not taken up by the controversies or whatsoever that was going on in the media. According to him, he cannot wait to fight to defend
his championship titles and if it is Khan then he does not mind it.
For Khan this is good news since he was reluctant to get his title shot against Peterson.
