Lamont Peterson applies for license with the Nevada State Athletic Commission – Boxing News
Lamont Peterson, the current IBF and WBA welterweight champion, has applied with the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a boxing license. Peterson, who failed a random drug test due to which his rematch with Amir Khan was cancelled, believes he was not
at fault and that he should be given the license to fight.
Peterson’s lawyer Jeff Fried stated to the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Peterson’s behalf to ensure the champion gets a hearing. His letter stated, “We respectfully request the opportunity to present the relevant facts associated with Mr. Peterson's
licensing, of which recent media reports reflect material inaccuracies," Fried wrote in a letter obtained by ESPN.com. "In this regard, we plan on having medical experts present at the hearing and we request a reasonable period of time for presentation of
the facts by Mr. Peterson and his legal and medical teams, and to otherwise be responsive to any questions from the commissioners and/or their medical team.”
On the other hand, Keith Kizer, executive director of Nevada State Athletic Commission, said that Peterson has to prove his stance that he did not take the drugs intentionally. He added that the commission will give Peterson the chance to prove himself right
but it will be his burden to do so.
Peterson’s negative drug test reports came in last week, shocking Khan and his team. Khan claimed that he is highly disappointed and heartbroken since he had prepared hard for the fight. Out of anger, Khan called Peterson a cheat at several instance claiming
that the IBF should rip Peterson off his titles and give it back to him.
It should be noted here that Peterson’s victory over Khan in December was already a controversial issue and now his failed drug test reports have made the scenario worst. Khan is dismantled since he wanted to get Peterson in the ring to get his titles back.
For now, Golden Boy Promotions and Amir Khan are looking to arrange a fight somewhere in June or July. Khan’s opponent has not been decided yet. There are chances that Khan might face Peterson if the champion is able to get a license.
