Lamont Peterson brushes aside Amir Khan’s claims of injustice – Boxing News
Unified WBA (Super) and IBF Light Welterweight Champion Lamont Peterson has brushed aside Amir Khan’s claims of injustice during their first encounter. Lamont Peterson, in his yesterday’s interview, said that points deduction by a referee is as a rare case
in boxing matches as the pushing that was done by Khan.
Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson will be going for the match on May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Their first encounter took place in December last year when Khan lost his both his IBF and WBA titles. Khan was irked with the referee’s decision
of deducting two points from his score at the end of the match for pushing Peterson. Since then, Khan and his worldwide fan club have been in rage over the decision. On Khan’s demand, the IBF declared both the fighters to go for an immediate rematch. Khan
has repeatedly said that he did not lose to Peterson and if the results were not changed, Khan would have retained his titles.
During the interview, when Peterson was asked Khan’s claims, he iterated, “You can say they’ve never taken points away for a championship fight for pushing, but I challenge anyone to show me someone that pushed that much, for the reasons he was pushing.
And you can call it pushing, but I’m calling it elbows to the face, and you should be getting points taken away for that…It’s a foul. These pushes did damage and pulling on the back of my head. I went to the hospital after the fight. I had big swelling in
the neck area [from Khan's pulling down on his head]…You can call it what you want, but at the end of the day, he was fouling, he was penalized for it and I won the fight.”
Even today, Khan has not accepted the fact that he lost to Peterson in December. In his recent interview, Khan said he and his fans still think he holds the titles and that he will take back what is his. He has been lashing out on Peterson while the latter
has mostly maintained his silence.
