Lamont Peterson finally lashes out on Amir Khan rematch decision – Boxing news
As expected, the current WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion, Lamont Peterson has finally broke the silence to lodge a written appeal against the rematch decision of the WBA against the former champion Amir Khan.
Last week, the WBA decided that Peterson will face Amir Khan at an immediate notice to defend the light-welterweight title. The decision was based on Amir’s claims of last match's results being hijacked by a mystery man who was later identified by the IBF
as Mustafa Ameen Hussain, an honorary worker for the organisation. The date for the rematch has not been announced yet, but being an ‘immediate rematch,’ it is expected to be held soon.
Amir Khan was initially confident of his claims when he filed the petition. However, now it seems like Khan has lost faith since he has withdrawn his appeal to the IBF.
On this, trainer, manager and mentor of Peterson, Barry Hunter stated, “We are extremely pleased that Golden Boy and Amir Khan withdrew their protest with the IBF. As we have said all along, we were not going to be forced to make a decision by one person
or entity and we will continue to do what is in the best interest of Lamont Peterson.”
Even though Amir Khan’s stance seems to be in jeopardy, his team contests that they are still firm-footed, however in the absence of WBA supervisor Michael Welsh and referee Joe Cooper they believe the case would remain incomplete.
Furthermore, when it came down to the recent developments regarding the rematch decision, Peterson’s side confirmed, “A comprehensive written appeal has been submitted to the WBA and we are confident that the WBA will overturn its decision mandating an immediate
rematch and recognise Lamont Peterson as the true and final WBA jr. (light) welterweight world champion.”
Not only this, Peterson’s camp seems a bit overwhelmed with anguish over Amir's takes. Last night, the side quashed rumours of negotiations between both the camps for a rematch in Washington DC, saying that as of yet there have not been any dialogues on
this issue, even though Khan’s camp wants the fight to take place as soon as possible.
