Lamont Peterson wants more time to seek medical records – Boxing News
IBF light welterweight titlist Lamont Peterson has asked the Nevada State Athletic Commission for more time in order to seek medical records that can prove him innocent. Peterson was test positive for having steroids in his body, just two weeks before he
was scheduled to take on British fighter Amir Khan.
“Mr. Peterson's local counsel, Pete Bernhard, wrote to us asking for more time to get more medical information for us,” revealed Keith Kizer, executive director of Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Peterson grabbed the WBA and the IBF light welterweight titles from Khan in December last year. The WBA has already stripped him off the titles while the IBF still has to rule over the situation. Khan has filed an official request with the IBF to reverse
the fight’s results, considering Peterson was juiced up.
However, Peterson still believes he is a true champion and therefore he has applied for license with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
“We appreciate the commission's willingness to place his mater on the July NSAC agenda. However, because Mr. Peterson continues to meet with his medical professionals for further work-ups, I asked to defer this matter, at least to the August agenda, and
I will provide medical information as soon as it's available,” said Peterson’s counsel Pete Bernhard.
For now, it is not sure as to whether Peterson will be permitted to fight again or not. CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer is already trying his level best to make sure Peterson is stripped of the titles by the IBF as well.
If this happens, the IBF light welterweight title will be on the line as well for the Khan vs. Garcia event. It should be noted here that Amir Khan was to fight Peterson on May 19, but due to the positive drug test, the fight was cancelled. Peterson’s stripped
WBA title is already on the line when Khan meets Garcia on July 14 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
Khan not only wants Peterson to be stripped off the titles but he also wants the IBF to ban the Washington based fight for life.
