Which routing protocol would I use on a LAN with two subnets? Should I use the same protocol for communication between two buildings on the same block? I'm trying to understand this..

  1. It comes down to using a routable protocol vs an non-routable protocol.  A non-routable would be used on a LAN, where as going between buildings would probably mean going through an actual router device, that would require a routable protocol.

I let this site explain it more...

  2. With two subnets on one router, you don't need routing, the router will know of the networks because it is directly connected to each.  But I would suggest OSPF or EIGRP for internal routing.  This is not a trivial task however.
