Warwickshire needed 290 runs for victory against Lancashire on the final day’s play of a County Championship Division One match at the Aigburth, Liverpool in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Thursday, August 4, 2011.
The target was a stiff one for the visitors, as they had less than 70 overs of play left in the day. However, this was an opportunity for the Lancashire bowlers to take 10 wickets in the day in order to win the match.
The hosts came very close to victory, as they picked up eight wickets in the day, but they needed a couple more to win the match before the umpires called the day off.
Warwickshire’s wicketkeeper batsman Tim Ambrose saved the day for his side, remaining unbeaten on 66 runs until the end of the day. His effort guided the team to 217/8 in the end, which was enough to draw the match.
Although batting was not much difficult, the cracks in the pitch had widened, which gave enough assistance to the bowlers to cause problems for the opposition.
Warwickshire’s start to their run chase was an impressive one, as the team’s openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Varun-Chopra-c2745 and Neil Carter constructed a solid half-century stand for the first wicket.
The pair put together 72 runs at the top of the order before Carter got out. He would have been disappointed not to make most of the conditions, getting out for 25 runs with the help of fur boundaries.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WTS-Porterfield-c2801 was unable to make most of the conditions, as he was dismissed for a couple of runs.
Just four runs later, Chopra was also sent back to the pavilion after contributing 46 runs to the total. He played well, but got out at the wrong time of the innings, putting his side under immense pressure at 91/3.
Warwickshire’s captain Jim Troughton failed to get going this time around, as he was dismissed for a duck. His downfall saw the team struggling at 92/4.
Middle-order players Laurie Evans and Ambrose guided their side out of trouble with a 68-run stand for the fifth wicket. The former failed to make most of the start he got to his innings, getting out for 30 runs.
All-rounder http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rikki-Clarke-c85428 was the sixth wicket to fall in the innings after adding 12 runs to the total. He stayed out in the middle for a long time and was involved in a 50-run partnership with Ambrose.
A couple of more wickets fell in the innings, as Chris Woakes and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JS-Patel-c1747 got out for 2 and 0 respectively.
However, Ambrose stood in the way of Lancashire’s victory, as he remained unbeaten on 66 runs until the end. The keeper batsman struck five boundaries in his match saving innings.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Keedy-c58524 was yet again impressive for Lancashire, picking up three wickets, but would have been disappointed with the match ending in a draw.
