Lance Berkman leads St. Louis Cardinals over the Houston Astros 11-7 – MLB Update
Lance Berkman was unstoppable on Thursday, April 28 as he took St. Louis Cardinals to an 11-7 win against Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, Houston.
Berkman added four runs in the sixth inning which saw the team amass nine runs. There was barely any doubt that the star hitter was thrilled by this super game.
It was the Astros which laid the foundation of this high scoring game, as Chris Johnson homered to left on Kyle McClellan’s fastball. The strike gave him and his team two runs. They tripled the lead in the third inning with Hunter Pence’s single. St. Louis
managed to bring the lead down to 3-1 in the fifth inning when they opened their account with Gerald Laird’s single.
However, the Astros seemed resilient, as Carlos Lee made it 4-1 for their team in the same inning by another single. Suddenly things took a big turn for the Cardinals. The sixth inning opened the floodgates of runs, as Matt Holliday was the first to do it.
He singled to centre to score a single followed by Berkman’s three-run shot off an astonished Fernando Abad’s fastball, making it 5-4 for the Cardinals.
Kyle McClellan and David Freese were next with their respective singles. Matt Holliday succeeded in driving in three runs during the inning. The score shot up to a seemingly unsurpassable 10-4.
However, the Astros did not easily give up, as Angel Sanchez scored a single in the next inning, making it 10-5 as the Cardinals’ pitcher McClellan was apparently struggling by giving up five runs. Miguel Batista, who came on to pitch for the Cardinals was
then charged by Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee who scored two runs in the inning, bringing the score to 10-7. Nonetheless, Berkman did it again with a single, taking the lead to a comfortable 11-7 level which was upheld by Fernando Salas in the ninth inning as
he pitched a shut-out for the Cardinals.
"I don't think I could have expected or asked for a better return to Minute Maid Park than this," he said. "It's not like I was coming in here with a vendetta or something to prove, I just wanted to play well in front of my family. You always want to do
well."
The game saw the Indians’ offence power their way to an impressive victory. Houston put in a decent performance, but it was not enough to contain the Indians.
