Lance Berkman sparks as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Florida Marlins 3-2 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ right-fielder, Lance Berkman had an outstanding day with the bat as he went 2-for-4 with an average of .289 and scored one run including a decisive RBI in the Cardinals’ 3-2 win over the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium, Florida on
August 5.
The pitchers were dominant in the first two innings of the game as they grounded out the batters and did not permit any run. During the first inning, Rafael Furcal was grounded out towards third base on his sloppy hit. At second base, Jon Jay grounded out
and Albert Pujols struck-out.
Marlins also looked powerless in the second inning as Mike Cameron hit a single-run shot towards right-field but got out to second base when Joe Thurston hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to first base. At the short-stop position, John Buck grounded out
without contributing even a single run for the Marlins.
In the third inning, the Marlins got a 1-0 lead by adding one run to their score-card. Mike Stanton hit a triple run shot towards deep right-field but Greg Dobbs was able to score only a single run. At the top of the fourth inning, the Cardinals posted two
runs to get a lead while the Marlins also added one run to level the game 2-2 at the end of fourth inning.
Cameron said, “It got to the point where I didn't want to make myself look like a fool swinging with one hand. It just got kind of worse over the course of the game.”
Matt Holliday struck a solo homer (390 feet) towards right-field. The second run for the Cardinals was taken by Berkman when Gerald Laird drove a single-run shot to left-field. The next three innings including the seventh inning remained empty as the batters
faced difficulties to overcome the tricky pitches.
During the eighth inning, Berkman hit a crucial double-run shot towards deep centre-field and Pujols added a tie-breaking run to raise the momentum of the Cardinals. Jake Westbrook threw the ball with an ERA of 4.83 throughout his six inning pitches and
presented just two runs, six hits and two earned runs. He permitted three walks and was able to strike-out four batters on his 106 pitches.
After winning a nail-biting encounter, the Cardinals got a 2-0 lead in the four-game series played at Florida.
