Lance Berkman voices confidence in St. Louis Cardinals’ offence – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman Lance Berkman stated on Tuesday, February 14 that the team’s offence is going to be really competitive after the addition of Carlos Beltran. Berkman also voiced excitement about the team’s ability to excel despite the
departure of Albert Pujols.
"When you add a guy like Carlos Beltran, our offense is really going to be good," said Berkman, who will shift from right field to first base. "I'm still excited about this team. It doesn't spell the death now for the franchise that [Pujols] is not here."
The first baseman held a magnificent .301 average during the past season in 145 games he scored a total of 94 RBIs, hitting no less than 31 homers. His career average stands at .296 in the 6154 at-bats, with a total of 1107 runs.
He is, of course, but one of the increasingly talented and experienced hitters the team has.
Entering into the new season, the St. Louis Cardinals will defend their World Series title which they won by defeating the Texas Rangers in 2011. There are several contributing factors that can be attributed to the potential strength of the team.
First and foremost, the club’s 40-man roster is in no way lacking in experience, skill and strength. From their bullpen to the rotation and to the offence, everything testifies to the Cardinals’ bolstering as a strong side.
This, naturally, adds to the excitement in the ballclub. Chris Carpenter is one of the players manifesting this excitement.
"I think there is a lot of excitement around this ballclub with what happened at the end," starter Chris Carpenter said. "Guys are excited about this team, excited about the change, excited about [new manager] Mike [Matheny], Carlos Beltran, and [Adam Wainwright]
back.”
Much that has come the Cardinals’ way since the winning of the World Series title; it remains intriguing to see how they go against their rivals once the 2012 regular season starts. As the rotation remains intact and the offence realigned, the Cardinals
will generate enormous interest in the ballparks as they face their rivals.
