Lance Berkman will work with Houston Astros as volunteer coach this spring – MLB Update
Lance Berkman is still not sure over his retirement from Major League Baseball. He recently visited Houston Astros’ front office and promised them that he will be working as a volunteer coach during this spring despite his next seasons commitment in the big league.
Berkman was retired in October after a series of injuries hit him in this past baseball season. However, now different reports are coming in the media that not only he wants to play in MLB again but he is also interested to join the Astros as a volunteer coach.
“Coaching is something I want to pursue after I am done playing, If you have any aspirations to be a college baseball coach, the one guy you want to learn from is coach Graham. Having flexibility if I want to play another year or two was important, If I decide to hang it up, I have something to step into immediately, The guys call me coach, I told them to call me Lance. Coach sounds weird,” Berkman said.
Later coach Wayne Graham said about Berkman and explained in the media with detail, “He brings instant credibility as a person and as a hitter, He loves coaching, and the kids just love hanging out with him.”
Meanwhile, regarding news that Astros and Berkman might join hands once again is somewhat still a speculation.
The 13-year-old Major League veteran, Berkman spent this past season with the St. Louis Cardinals and earned approximately $12 million but with the number of injuries hit him last season. Also, at this age, experts believe that he will not be earning that much cash with any team for next season.
However, according to some reports, Berkman’s agent wants a lucrative deal for his client. Berkman’s agent has also cleared that a good long term deal will be the only reason his client will opt out from the retirement or else there are high chances that he might be going for a full time coaching job.
Berkman finished this past Major League competition with .259 hitting average along with two homers, seven RBIs and .381 OBP.
