Lance Berkman’s decisive RBI helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 - MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ right-fielder, Lance Berkman had an amazing day with the bat as he hit a final RBI and went 2-for-6 with an average of .287 in the Cardinals’ 8-7 win against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, Milwaukee on August 2.
Brewers got off to a good start as they added two runs during the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ryan Braun was grounded out to short-stop position and Corey Hart posted the first run. The second run for the Brewers was taken by Jerry Hairston Jr. when
Prince Fielder hit a sacrifice bunt to centre-field.
At the top of the second inning, the Cardinals scored one run to reduce their lead but the Brewers also added a single run at the bottom of the second inning to increase their lead 3-1. Matt Holliday hit a home-run for the Cardinals while Josh Wilson contributed
one run on a single-run shot of Hart towards left-field.
The batters were score-less during the third inning as at the short-stop position, Jaime Garcia grounded out and Rafael Furcal grounded out to second base. Jon Jay struck-out looking at the top of the third inning.
Cardinals went ahead 6-3 with a leading five runs during the fourth inning. Skip Schumaker hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to first base and Albert Pujols scored a single run. Holliday put the second run of the fourth inning when Daniel Descalso singled
off left-field. Garcia struck three-run homer to right-field while Schumaker and Descalso both singled to finish the five-run fourth inning.
In the very next inning, the Brewers’ batters also accelerated their lead by blasting four runs and went ahead 7-6. Hairston Jr. added one run on the single-run drive of Fielder to right-field. Yuniesky Betancourt homered to left-centre while Braun and Fielder
both added two runs jointly to end the four-run campaign for the Brewers.
Cardinals tied the game 7-7 during the seventh inning when Holliday hit a grounder into double play, second to shortstop to first and Furcal completed a tie run. Garcia allowed 10 hits and three earned runs in his five inning pitches. He was able to strike-out
six batters on his 85 pitches.
Berkman singled off left-field and Holliday scored a tie-breaking run in the 11th inning to give the Cardinals a convincing 8-7 lead. However, the Cardinals levelled the three-game series 1-1.
