Lance Ten Broeck takes halfway lead at the US Senior Open
Lance Ten Broeck fired rounds of 66 and 68 to be at 6-under par 134, and a shot ahead of the overnight leader Tom Kite, following the second round of the US Senior Open, in Michigan.
Broeck got off to a similar start at the opening round and recorded two birdies in a row on the opening two holes.
Thereafter, he suffered two bogeys prior to recording another birdie on the 15th hole. He took the 36-hole lead for the first time in his professional career since he led the PGA Tour’s Hall of Fame classic in 1982 after two rounds.
Broeck, the full-time caddy for Tim Herron, does not play regular golf on the Champions Tour. He is currently playing the second tournament of his 2012 golf campaign. Earlier, he tied for the 71st position at the Principal Charity Classic, held last month.
According to him, he estimates to play around 25 rounds each year. He joked, "I guess that means I'm well rested".
He now has a chance to earn the biggest cheque of his professional career with a win in the 50-and-over major event. "Caddying is a lot easier than playing," he said. "That's why you get paid more money to play".
Yet, he will have to work really hard in the remaining two rounds because of the tough competition on the top of the leaderboard.
Kite has been sensational in the past few months and is most likely to challenge him atop the leaderboard on weekend.
In addition to that, there are six other players who are tied for the third position with only a two-stroke margin. The six-player pack includes some of the big names such as Tom Lehman and Bernhard Langer.
"I figured I should be able to make the cut, but I never figured that I'd be in the last group on Saturday," he said.
He now aims to remain consistent as he was in the opening two rounds and focus on his driving accuracy, as it can play a key role in his success in the tournament.
Overall, the course is playing really tricky and recording birdies seems a difficult task for the participants.
