Lancers beat Poly high school volleyball team – Volleyball news
The boys’ volleyball team of Lakewood High school, which is commonly known as the Lancers, put up a great show of volleyball on Thursday night.
The Lancers crossed their ways with their Moore League foe Long Beach Poly high school volleyball team. The decision was out at the end of third set and Lancers marched as winners. They posted 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 in respective three sets and bagged victory.
The Lancers entered the contest with the tag of defending league champion and showcased an up to mark performance. They put up a combined effort and did everything well in improving their league record to 4-0.
On the other hand, the Jackrabbits of Poly High School suffered the first loss in the league matches. They captured last three matches in row but the Lancers came to knock them off. The Jackrabbits now stand with 3-1 league.
Storm Faagata played an instrumental role in Lancers’ victory. He contributed match-high nine kills and received huge applause. Equally talented outside hitter Sam Carlson notched up six kills and also registered one block in the match. Scott Ragusa did
a great job on attack and added six kills.
The Lancers did all this without the help of their long-term coach Jeremy Moenoa, who resigned only two days before the match. It was a big blow for the team and many would have thought that it would badly affect the performance of team.
However, the team moved ahead under the leadership of assistant coach Devon Taylor and displayed a classy performance.
Speaking of the head coach’s departure and match preparation, Sam Carlson stated, “We were ready for this game, we've been preparing for it and our practices were good. Our coach, Devon, he helped us make it through and he helped us with our practices.”
Meanwhile, the coach Taylor shared his thoughts. He said, “It would be weird if I didn't have that one season under my belt (at Warren), but because I was already a head coach before, it was kind of an easy transition for us. And the guys were really, really
receptive about it and worked really hard in practice yesterday and it showed.”
The Jackrabbits opened the match with powerful serves and tried to put pressure on the Lancers. They picked up an early lead of 11-6 and seemed like totally shaped for the first-set win.
Nonetheless, the Lancers gradually grasped the game plan of rival team and came up with appropriate strategy. They played sensibly and shortened the gap of points 13-17. Afterwards, the Lancers started a flurry of scores and claimed first set, 25-20.
Lancers were 12-14 in the following set but then rallied a splendid 6-0 to take lead (18-14). Jackrabbits dropped another set in row and seemed worried about the match outcome. With two sets in hand, Lakewood team cruised past to 25-17 win in third set and
declared match victory.
