Land Rover Freelander 1.8 XEI HELP!?

Hi, we have had our landy for about 16months now, it has always had a slight oil leak and it seems to burn oil aswell. Whenever we go anywhere recently there is smoke coming out of the engine and a burnt oil smell. But also the oil now just seems to fall out as soon as you put in it. Any ideas?

I don't think that the head gasket has gone as there is no white creamyness in the oil cap and I have been lead to believe that's what you should look out for. Do you think it is worth getting fixed, or just scrapping it?
