Landbouwkrediet's rider Sven Nys wins Fidea Jaarmarktcross Niel 2011- Cycling News
Landbouwkrediet Team’s Sven Nys took his fourth successive victory in Fidea Jaarmarktcross Niel, Belgium on Friday, November 11.
He showed brilliant skills in the dry and fast course and easily beat the Belgian champion, Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) in the last lap.
Nys powered away in the fourth lap, with the help of his teammate, Sven Vanthourenhout, who managed to build the gap.
Albert was the favourite to win this ordeal but he failed to uphold his pace and took the second place, 22 seconds down to Nys.
Kevin Pauwels of Sunweb-Revor finished third, with a difference of 38 seconds ahead of Mathieu Boulo and Tom Meeusen (Telenet Fidea Cycling Team)
Nys told the media, “This might’ve looked easy but it certainly wasn’t like that. This course will never suit me and those fast courses will never be my cup of tea. When I heard Niels was coming back I rode a pace which I could maintain for the full hour.
I also kept in mind to have something left for a sprint”.
There were one or two patches of mud during the course but most of the track was dry and very few cyclists needed to change bikes.
After a few laps, Tom Meeusen jumped over a ditch but it did not get him any closer to the race leaders.
Boulo was dropped out by five cyclists, Nys, Albert, Pauwels, Mariusz Gil (Baboco – Revor) and Vanthourenhout.
He commented, “The chase group fell apart and I followed Gil to protect Sven Vanthourenhout. I thought it was up to Kevin Pauwels to launch the chase on Boulo, but suddenly I was alone with Gil and they shouldn’t have done that”.
Albert experienced a flat tyre during the race but he controlled the situation well and outclassed Gil, Duval and Meeusen in the sixth lap.
Pauwels increased his pace and followed Albert and Nys in the seventh lap. Nonetheless, Nys crossed the finished-line with a timing of 58 minutes and 8 seconds ahead of the other cyclists.
Mariusz Gil (Baboco - Revor Cycling Team), Aurélien Duval and Sven Vanthourenhout (Landbouwkrediet) were at the sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.
