  1. Never put your fingers in the gills. It could seriously harm the fish.Thumb in the mouth and other hand holding the belly is a good way to go.With smaller catfish you want to hold their belly against your palm and one finger on top of the right fin and the other under the left fin so you don't get poked.Always get your hands wet when handling them.A soft net is always very helpful. You can get a good soft net at Walmart for like $10-20.

  2. Easiest way to land fish is with a soft net with rubber-coated mesh.  No risk of the fish getting away, and if its a fish you decide to release for whatever reason, the rubber-coated mesh does little damage.

  3. It actually varies depending on the fish you've caught. It's never good to put your fingers or hand in a fishes gills due to the damage.Lipping most fish and supporting the belly is a good way to go if you don't have a good net like the one previously mentioned.Another good idea if wanting to release and not do any harm to the fish is to wet your hands before touching them.

  4. be extra careful with catfish. If they get you with that top fin, you can have one helluva infection.

  5. depends, just grab a bass by the mouth, but u shoulld get a net
