Oh yeah, nearly forgot, as for your question, follow exactly what "litig8r" has written.

  2. In fact, this is why Flight Simulators (Even Microsoft) are an excellent teaching tool.

You could land via GPS procedures - Its called a GPS approach. The NAV-APP mode wil NEVER land the plane, but it will take you down to "minimums" where you will be in a position to land the plane - This works best with an "ILS" approach.

What you need to learn is how to shoot an "instrument approach" with your flight sim. Here are soem helpful sites.

For more information about the ILS feature, click Library/Help on the main Flight Simulator page, click Rod Machaod's Ground School, and then click Open Handbook. Class 17 in this handbook is Flying an ILS Approach

  3. Are you trying to land via GPS procedures? Those things just direct you towards the runway, they don't land you. What you do is either get your hands on some charts or fly to airports with ILS. If you do the former, the charts will tell you when to descend. If you try the latter, just set your NAV1 to the ILS frequency, and set your autopilot to NAV - APP mode. Then watch the plane land itself.

  4. Now you see why these things arent worth anything when it comes to learning to fly.
