Question:

Landline phone bill and DSL?

I am thinking about moving into my first apartment and I am a bit confused on how my landline phone bill works.

How do I pay for it?

Do I get to pick my own service and just pay the company?

Would it be a problem if I picked my own service living in an apartment?

Also do I have to have a landline service to have DSL?

Do I have to pay the city at all for having a landline if I have company I am subscribed to?

Or if I do not have a company that I am subscribed to is there a bill for having a landline even if I do not use it often?

  1. The customary way to pay a phone bill is to write a check when they send the bill to you, although many companies offer online bill pay now.

You usually get to pick your own service, depending on where you live.  Some towns only have one phone company, and some apartment complexes have a deal with a particular phone company to provide service at a group rate. (I'm not sure if such a deal would preclude you from choosing your own phone service or not.)

You usually have to have land line service to have DSL since it is mostly phone companies who offer it, and they connect you to it through your existing phone line.  There are some companies that sell only DSL service, but you would have to pay for them to run the wiring into your apartment and it would probably cost an arm and a leg.  I don't advise it.

I'm not sure why you would have to pay the city for having a land line.  The phone company provides the service, not the city.

You can't use a land line at all unless you have a company you subscribe to.  There may be a phone jack in your apartment, and you could plug a phone into it, but nothing will happen until you pay the phone company to turn it on.  From then on, you will have to pay a monthly fee whether you use the phone or not.

  2. This is what I did.  I called up the local provider in the area.  Had them put me on their basic plan.  Then I found a web site that made the amount cheaper and I got more out of it and had them switch me over to them and saved almost 50%.  They sent me a bill and I sent the check in to them.  Or you can have them aoutomatically take it out of your checking account each month.

If you'd like the web site that I used, email me and I'll pass the information along to you.

There should be no reason why you'd have to pay the city for having a service in your apartment.  There's no difference in services between an apartment and a house.  If you don't have a computer, then you don't need the DSL line.  If you don't use the line often and have a cell phone, I suggest you go through the company that I am on.  They are world wide, and will save you money.

    Good Luck to you.
