  1. Unless you live in Hull which I believe has its own independent landline service, you will have to get a line through BT. However as the BT employee points out if there is a line to the house already, even if it is disconnected, then it should be possible to get an internet service. If you can get a line without a BT contract get back to me and I will give you some information about two excellent companies for line rental, calls and internet.

  2. You don't need to 'go with BT'.

Contact your chosen  Service Provider and they will get the line switched on for you through BT. All your rentals etc will be taken care of by your Service Provider.

If required, a BT Openreach  engineer will visit your home and complete all the necessary wiring on behalf of your Service Provider.

See this website www.openreach.co.uk  for details on what Openreach is.

  3. further to caras answer, companies like talk talk and the post office among others, can get the line connected for you and you pay the line rental to them. as cara pointed out, if bt connect the line it is a 12 month contract, which if another company then takes over the line, you get stuck with a cancellation charge. all the other companys now can get the line connected or even installed for you.

  4. not really, what you would need to do is get bt to turn the phone on for you then get another olo to take it other the only problem being that you have to take a min 12 month contract with bt, have you checked with bt if the line is there's if it's with another company then you will be ok

  5. this is usa...we have Bellsouth and AT&T

  6. Hi Gary

Sorry mate, its either BT or Virgin...

If you want broadband over the telephone line, which it sounds like is the only option, you will have to go with BT. but you dont have to use there broadband service, its is one of the more expensive services. Shop around, you get more for less, but you will need a BT landline to recieve broadband!.

    Sorry, hope this helps...

    Good luck
