Landlord wants TruGreen/ChemLawn to treat our lawn, can I refuse?

My landlord scheduled TruGreen to treat the lawn in our backyard, but I really don't like the idea because I'm worried about the effects this can have on my pets' health. My dogs spend most of their days in the yard (weather permitting) and they eat a lot of grass. So, can someone please tell me if I have a legal right to refuse my landlord the use of fertilizers?

  1. Tell your landlord that your have severe allergic reactions...that's what I did, and my former landlord stopped the service

  2. Nope his land.. his right. Just keep the dogs off it for the day and they will be fine.

  3. No - TruGreen says it's safe for pets.

  4. no

  5. Instead of refusing and confronting, why not give the guy a call and try explaining your circumstances to him in hopes that you can reach agreement?

If the landlord owns the property, you have no legal right as long as adequate warnings are given about pets, children, etc.

  6. I'm afraid he has the right. He is liable if insects/termites/rats/whatever develops in your untreated yard and goes to the other tenants' properties.

But you shouldn't have much to worry about, what they use is mostly pet-friendly (imagine how many lawsuits they would have by now if it wasn't)

  7. My landlord was going to do the same thing but couldn't do it due to the fact that my kids have an allergies to it.  He has to keep the yard green the hard way because of not willing to try other products we suggested.

  8. Not if they own the property, you cannot do anything about it other than express your concerns.  Of course, you can suggest another service with more pet friendly fertilizers and offer to pay for it yourself.

  9. I don't know about the legal right, but you have the personal right. As long as you always have your rent in time, and are a well mannered tenant, you can refuse!  But first see it the TruGreen/ChemLawn will be harmful to your pets. Call the company.

    Good Luck!
