Landon McNamara and Leonardo Acevedo prevail in Round 2 of Arica World Star Tour
Hawaii’s Landon McNamara and Chile’s Leonardo Acevedo advanced into the third round (Round of 32) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Arica World Star Tour presented by Maui and Sons after claiming top honours in their respective Round
2 (Round of 64) heats that went down at El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Thursday, June 14.
Peru’s Cristobal De Col finished behind McNamara in the fifth heat to accompany the winner into the next round of the competition. Brazil’s Antonio Eudes and Peru’s Javier Swayne rounded out the third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated
from the competition.
The sixth heat saw Peru’s Carlo Zapata successfully extending his life in the event as well after securing runner-up place. Costa Rico’s Carlos Munoz finished in third place, while Argentina’s Juan Arca had to settle for a bottom-place finish.
The barrelling four-to-six foot conditions prevailing at the primary event site promised a heavy dose of exciting action, along with plenty of thrill as the local and international surfers braced themselves to tame the threatening waves that had resulted
in the recording of plenty of injuries on the first day.
McNamara did not look at ease during the fifth heat of Round 2, having a tough time to navigate his way through the barrelling waves. During the course of the heat, he only managed to lock one wave, but as it turned out, that single wave was all he needed
to secure the win. Unloading a series of technical manoeuvres on the massive barrel, the Hawaiian surfer posted an 8.00 on the score-board.
De Col scored a 3.00 and 1.25 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 4.25 points, which earned him runner-up place and thus carried him through into the next round.
Eudes and Swayne seemed completely out of sorts during the course of the four-man battle and only managed to register a heat-total of 3.38 and 2.35 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the event.
The sixth heat saw Acevedo claim the win after scoring a 7.50 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 4.75-point ride for a heat-total of 12.25 points.
Zapata successfully made the Round 3 cut as well. He got off to an excellent start, collecting an excellent 9.25 off his first business-wave, but only managed to back it up with a 1.70-point wave, thus finishing 1.30 points behind Acevedo.
Munoz finished in third place with a heat-total of 4.60 points, while Arca rounded out the bottom-position after failing to register a single score. The lacklustre performances by the two rivals resulted in an early exit for them from the contention for
the event title.
