Landry Fields expects more NBA players to follow Deron Williams’ lead: NBA Lockout Update
The young shooting guard of the New York Knicks, Landry Fields has suggested that many NBA superstars might follow the lead of New Jersey Nets’ point guard Deron Williams and sign with the overseas clubs during the NBA lockout.
Williams, an All-Star and one of the best point guards in the league, made a five million dollar- 1 year agreement with a Turkish club Besiktas last week. According to the contract, Williams will play for the Turkish club in the
fall, if the NBA fails to make settlements by then.
The National Basketball Association is experiencing work stoppage for the second time in its history and a solution, or even a tentative date for it, is not within sight as such. This has left major future concerns on the minds
of every NBA player and Fields echoed those sentiments.
"I think with big-name guys like [Williams], it's possible because teams are going to want to sign these enormous superstars. But they know that once the lockout ends, [the players] will leave. I think if these overseas teams can
bring in superstars, sell some tickets, bring more of a fan base to that country, that's what they're going to do.” Landry said.
New York Knicks starting shooting guard might be making prediction for others; however he stated that he has no interest in playing overseas. Landry is working out with his personal trainer in Los Angeles and playing pickup games
to improve his techniques so that he can strike back with greater strength in the next season.
"My whole focus of this offseason is just having a mentality that you have to survive in the NBA. You look at other guys and how successful they are. It's a business; you can be here one day and gone the next.” Landry said.
The Stanford University’s superstar was selected during the 2010 NBA Draft by the Knicks as the 39th overall pick. His promising performances in the summer league and the preseason enabled him to book a place in the
Knicks starting five early on in the regular season. During his first season with the team, the 23 year old guard impressed throughout and finished with an average of 9.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Landry carries enormous potential and has the ability
to become a fine player. For now though, many analysts believe that he is a ‘work in progress’ case.
However, the young guard is very right in his assessment. With each passing day, more and more NBA players, stars or not, are announcing their affiliations with the Europeans leagues. All of this, and the fact that if the situation
does not improve, the players might opt for permanent contracts, will certainly be playing on the minds of the NBA officials and the owners.
