Landscaping- what is used to cover the ground/weeds?

Not using mulch, I believe it is some type of plastic item.

Please dont use the black plastic.  It not only kills the weeds but the soil too.  Better off to get "WEED MAT" which looks like a plastic but actually has breathing holes in it for the soil.

There is a black roll(about 2-3 ft long it comes in yards)of weed prevention you can put down when planting a garden, putting down before placing rocks, ect... Or there is a new product out that looks like mulch but is made of recycled tires(plastic like). This product is suppose to keep it's color and last alot longer than mulch. They both can be purchased at Home Depot, Menards, or Lowes(any store like that). You would locate these items in you lawn and garden area. If you can't find them ask for help. Good luck.
