The Australian tennis player, Jarmila Groth has reached the quarterfinal round of the Landsky Lighting Guangzhou International Women's Open after getting the better of her Veteran tennis foe, Tamarine Tanasugarn in a total of two sets on Thursday. The final
match score was 6-1 6-4.
Next up for the Australian is Maria Elena Camerin, who made her way into the quarterfinal round of the competition on Wednesday, after overpowering her seventh seeded foe, Alberta Brianti from Italy.
“It was a difficult clash particularly the second set. Tammy started playing quite well and also had a number of break points on my serve at 4-4, therefore, that was a good match to triumph in the end and I am happy that I did it today. As far as my upcoming
match is concerned, I have not seen Maria play very much this season however she is an experienced player and it is definitely not going to be easy for sure. I will try my best to play my natural game and stay focused throughout the game. I am really hoping
to reach semi final and I will definitely do everything possible for it”, said Groth after the match.
In other action on Thursday, the fourth seeded Ayumi Morita from Japan was also toppled by her Romanian tennis opponent, Edina Gallovits in a total of three sets. The final match score was 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
The final singles champion on Thursday was the nineteen-year old player, Ksenia Pervak from Russia, who defeated her compatriot as well as doubles partner, Alexandra Panova in a three setter clash. The final match score was 7-5, 2-6, 6-0.
Ksenia will next play Alla Kudryavtseva on Friday for a final four berth. Gallovits, on the other hand, will take on a wild card entrant, Han Xinyun from China, while Zhang Shuai will play the Indian tennis sensation, Sania Mirza.
In the doubles semi final, Sania and Gallovits will take on Tanasugarn and Olga Savchuk, where as Lu Jing-Jing, from China and, Xu Yi-Fan, will meet Liu Wanting and Han.
In other action, the Americans continued to dominate in Canada as Alexa Glatch as well as Christina McHale made their way into the final eight of the Bell Challenge in Quebec.
McHale reached the final eight after hammering down Valerie Tetreault in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4 6-3, while Glatch got the better of Stephanie Dubois in a two setter clash. The final match score was 7-5, 6-2.
"I was already aware of the fact that the crowd is going to support her however that would be nothing against me. I knew quite well that she was performing well so I just tried to stay focused and use my forehand. I didn’t lose focus on my game throughout
the match”, said McHale.
Glatch, in her match lost a total of three consecutive games from 4-2 up in the opening set, but regrouped well, triumphing in the next five games consecutively to lead, 7-5, and 2-0. The American didn’t give up and thus won it in the end.
"I like playing here in front of such a huge crowd. Moreover, what I like more is that the surface here suits me and I am looking forward to play well in the upcoming matches as well”, Glatch told reporters after the victory.
Earlier in the day, the eighth seeded, Sofia Arvidsson, as well as Tamira Paszek, a qualifier grabbed quarter berths. Arvidsson, who is a former runner up here, bounced back well after losing the opening set to outlast Mirjana Lucic in a total of three sets.
The final match score was 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Tamira Paszek also defeated Jill Craybas in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2.
