  1. Great base, fantastic area, but remember... it's a headquarters base so it has LOTS of high ranks and lots of politics.  But, along with that comes extras that other bases may not have.  We were very spoiled with that being our first base!!

We were there for 5 years, and I even stayed there while hubby went remote.  Schools in the area are good.  Lots of opportunities for college in the area.  Great historical area.

You are surrounded by military... Fort Eustis is up in Newport News/Denbeigh, and NAS Norfolk is to the south.  And then there are oodles of small Navy and Marine bases in the Norfolk/Portsmouth area.

  2. It's pretty fair. It is your typical Air Force base and is kind of set away from the rest of the city, (Ft. Eustis is a bit more centrally located as far as stores and restaurants go). The PX is decent as is the food court. Good commissary hours (not closed on Mondays like so many others). The library is really nice. Security is tight. Close to AMC theater and near some low-income neighborhoods. But the base itself is dandy, not much different other Air force bases.

  3. It is not to bad.  It is the oldest Air Force base so there is always a lot of construction going on.  They just built a new gym in 2003 which is very nice.  Over all it is a nice base.
