Question

why is the english language actually called english?

in america do they call it american?

i dont get it because england is just a small part of the UK so why is it so well known that it has a language named after it?

if you understand what i mean, can u let me know?

The reason why "English" is a language because in the UK, languages such as "Welsh", "Gaelic", and "Irish" exist. "English" just somehow happened to surpass all of them, and it eventually became the dominant language over time (somehow through the course of history).

The English language was spoken by the Anglo-Saxons (a group of nomadic people), long before. The word "English" actually derives from the word "Anglo". See the similarity?

By the way, there's no language as "United Kingdomish" or "British", so you know.

In the U.S., we speak English. Our "version", however, might be referred to as "American English".

The English people from England were there way before the Americans were in America... so have you have heard of Colonies?

I'm American and everyone in the United States calls it English (or ingles, if you speak Spanish). That's where the language started.

Consequently, the Mexicans speak Spanish and the Brazilians speak Portuguese, even though Spain and Portugal are not bigger than Mexico and Brazil.

We do have problems with words such as fortnight, lorry, and pram.

Noah Webster, who wrote the first American English dictionary in 1827 actually tried to get the language to be called American because of the differences in word usage and spelling.

Now the Indonesians and Malaysians speak virtually the same language and they call their languages Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Malaysia.
