Lankan Tigers World Cup records
The champions of ICC World Cup 1996 the Sri Lankan cricket team, also known as the Lankan Tigers, have impressive team records in the 1996 match and other 50-over tournaments. The Tigers won the 1996 tournament by defeating the Australian team in the finals.
The team met the same opponents in the 2007 edition of the tournament, but failed to secure yet another win of the World Cup, as the final was a rain-affected match. However, the team has done reasonably well in one of the most awaited tournament of the game.
The Lankan Tigers have done an outstanding job since the 1996 World Cup win, as they have maintained a 15-year cricketing success. Besides the 50-over World Cup, the team has produced good results in other major events such as the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy,
in which they co-shared the title with the Indian team. And the Asian team also made it to the final stage of the T20 World Cup of 2009, as the Pakistani team pocketed the trophy home.
However, in likes of Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, players have been able to restore and break several team records. Most of these records were made or broken during the 1996 win but the team also did well in
other editions of the World Cup.
1996 World Cup
One of the teams biggest achievement, which also led to boosting their morale in the 1996 World Cup, was the highest team total against the Kenyan team of 398 for 5. In the same match the team also recorded its highest individual score by Aravinda de Silva,
as he scored a massive match-winning total of 145.
In the game against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752, the third wicket partnership between Asanka Gurusinha and Aravinda de Silva recorded a 183 runs, as Gurusinha made a healthy of 84 and his senior partner made 145. The partnership is the highest third wicket stand for the Lankan
Tigers in the history of the tournament.
2003 World Cup
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chaminda-Vaas-c1223 became the only bowler to take a hat-trick in the first three balls of the opposition innings, as he dismissed the top three Bangladeshi batsmen in the 2003 50-over World Cup. Left-arm Vaas is also the only Sri Lankan bowler to take a hat-trick
in a world cup. He was able to convert his hat-trick into the best figures by a Sri Lankan bowler in any edition of the World Cup, as he took 6 for 25.
2007 World Cup
Sanath Jayasuriya and Mahela Jayawardene scored the same amount of runs for the 3rd wicket partnership, as fellow teammates did in the 1996 edition of 183. Jayasuriya scored an impressive century and Jayawardene scored a healthy 82 against the

In the 2007 edition Lasith Malinga became world’s only bowler to take four consecutive wickets in four deliveries against the South African in the 50-over tournament. His four consecutive wickets also made him one of the few bowlers who have taken a hat-trick
in a world cup, and the second Sri Lankan to achieve the milestone after senior bowler Vaas.
Overall World Cup Matches Record
Besides the three amazing performance runs of 1996, 2003 and 2007 World Cup, the team holds some extraordinary overall records such as Jayasuriya’s scoring a massive of 1165 runs in 38 World Cup matches, making him the highest Sri Lankan run scorer of the
tournament. Wicket-keeper and current captain Kumar Sangakkara has 32 dismissals to his name from 21 world cup matches, making him the highest dismissal among the Lankan tigers.
The most number of wickets taken by any Sri Lankan bowlers goes to the veteran 800 test wicket holders http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157 of 53 wickets in just 31 world cup matches. His performances in the 50 over tournament, no doubt, have been commendable under the
entire stressful environment of the tournament.
The Tigers have done extremely well in the World Cup tournaments, maybe it’s because of the fact that they hold down to their nerves and can handle pressure. Or maybe they have the habit to rising up to the occasion and deliver. No matter what is the case,
the team promises good performances in the upcoming edition of the 50-over ICC World Cup 2011.
