I have lived in Dublin for a long time now I want to buy a house, I cant afford Dublin houses so I am thinking about Laois & commuting to Dublin daily for work. Can anyone sell this area to me? What is good about Laois? What is bad about it?

  1. To be honest, Portlaois is not a mecca or hive of activity, but it does have Portlaois, Great fishing, a clear run into Dublin and a clearer run out of it. The prices are lower(and dropping) and its a straight run from Kilkenny, Carlow and a whole host of other Irish places that are all not DUBLIN. And last but not least, LAOIS IS NOT DUBLIN.

  2. I live in Portlaoise. Couldn't afford to live in Kildare so bought a lovely 3bed semi for 245..That was last year.

Absolutely loving it here. They say the recession hasn't hit portlaoise because it has so much bew devlopment on the way. New town centre in teh next few years.Homebase just opened in a new retail park, new superquinn, argos on way as is mcd's, virgin(zavvi) music... loads of new stuff!!

it has a lovely lovely sense of community about it. has a park for the kids...brill train connections...

    You will love portlaoise,i promise!!

  3. What those feckin eejits before me said!!

  4. What's bad about it: Passing the road sign saying 'Welcome To Laois'

What's good about it: Passing the road sign saying 'You are now leaving Laois'

  5. I have relatives who live in Laois and I've been unfortunate enough to have to visit every year. To me, Laois just seems like a big countywide retirement village - I only ever see elderly people, and the rare sight of a young person almost shocks me. But then, they live in the country so perhaps it's different there, and if you're used to living in Dublin then perhaps it would be a welcome break, although you'll have to get used to shopping for all those godawful clothes in Shaws.

  6. i hope this helps you out

  7. I like these questions, but I'm finding it really hard to formulate an opinion on Laois. What is Laois? Take Portlaoise town out of the equation, and what are you left with? I have absolutely no idea. Oh yeah, Abbeyleix is famous for having massive traffic jams on Fridays and Sundays. Ammm, it has some bogland. A quick look at the front page of the Laois Nationalist will tell you that a lot of GAA fixtures were cancelled last weekend due to rain, there's been a lot of flood damage to properties across the county (not promising for potential house-buyers),  and there are asylum seekers on hunger strike in a hotel in Laois, presumably protesting about all the feckin rain.

What's good about Laois? It's not Dublin.
