Question:

Laos and Cambodia safe to travel in alone?

I'm 22 and I've done backpacking in Europe and Australia so I'm thinking of going to south east asia for 9 weeks, 2 of which in cambodia and laos.

Is it safe there alone, as I can't find anyone to go with me, and what about transport as some of the buses seem like kamakazi vehicles.

  1. I've never been to Laos but My husband and I did travel through Cambodia.  We also went to Thailand and Vietnam but Cambodia was by far the best.  Lovely people, cheap decent accomodation and easy to travel around.  The buses we used were excellent.  It was a company called the Mekong Express....the buese were air conditioned and they even played the movie Titanic (albeit dubbed over in Cambodian) as well as giving you food and a bottle of water! You'll find that ar your hostel or hotel they will have a travel desk where you can get booked on to buses or trains. They will organise everything for you...even a pick-up to take you to the bus station.

We also saw tons of people travelling alone and even got quite friendly with a few...met up for dinner and that sort of thing. We met people who had been to Laos and they had had no problems there.  Its an easy part of the world to travel though. Most people speak enough English so you are never stuck.

    Have fun!

    Ps.  We stayed here: http://www.bousavyguesthouse.com/

it was wonderful (although it was a 10 minute walk from the party street in Siam Riep), clean, cheap and very very comfortable.
